The danger of Pancreatic Cancer - Brian Lenihan was one of 371 people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in Ireland every year. The average age of diagnosis is 74, but this disease can strike younger people, especially those who have a family history of disease. This is very much silent cancer, with no early warning signs. Mr Lenihan suffering from stomach pains when he referred to the Mater Private Clinic in December 2009 for testing by his own doctor. That happens after this examination he received a diagnosis. Symptoms often do not appear until the tumor grows large enough to disrupt the function of the liver, stomach, and other nearby organs.
Surgery is the main treatment for pancreatic cancer. But surgery is only possible if the cancer is at an early stage. This involves the removal of all or part of the pancreas, which is buried deep in the abdomen. Chemotherapy can be given to shrink the tumor and Mr Lenihan underwent chemotherapy treatments while the Minster of Finance in the last government. Her father Brian Lenihan Snr died of cancer in 1995 at age 64. He underwent a liver transplant in 1989 at the Mayo Clinic in Boston. Pancreatic cancer has one of the highest death rates from all cancers, remission is rare, and the five-year survival rate of less than 5%.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs is currently being treated for pancreatic cancer. He has a liver transplant in 2009 and is currently attending the same clinic that treated Swayze in California.
